고에너지 천체물리 선도연구센터는 은하단과 밀집천체에서의 고에너지 천체현상을 이론과 관측을 통해 연구한다.
지상에서의 실험(주로 PAL-XFEL과 RAON 가속기를 이용)을 통해 은하단과 블랙홀 그리고 중성자별의 기원과 구조를 밝혀낼 계획이다.

GPF 선정자 수는 대학 연구역량의 우수성을 보여주는 지표 중 하나로 활용된다. 올해 UNIST는 표종철, 조수원, 권나경, 김성열, 이학봉, 배윤지, 김수환, 송승욱, 염호연, 최후연, 이상권, 임영현, 최서진, 최준호, 이영대, 이종영, 이영동 씨 등 총 17명을 GPF 선정자로 배출했다. 2011년부터 현재까지 GPF에 선정된 UNIST 대학원생은 총 79명이다.
